Everybody who is somebody, plus a good few nobodies turned up on 25th October for this traditional end-of-season bash, capably organised by the ubiquitous Paul Mepham and the usual team of over-used helpers. With nil in the way of refreshments, headquartered in a muddy car-park, and offering the prickly perils of the bush-privy, the event still attracted an impressive field of 407 riders (a record entry) who enjoyed sunshine with a blustery but warm SW wind. This happy accident occurred due to it being a week earlier than usual, thereby fooling the elements; note the appalling weather the following weekend.
Thanet was represented by riders of all classes and ages at all distances and fielded 22 riders, giving us a creditable 5th place against the usual Medway and Maidstone bully-boys. Winners were San Fairy Ann with 242 points. At 50k were Olly and Jonah representing the Go-Ride, supported by their dads, along with the Wrinklies and other senior members. The main body at 100k who included the Sunday gang and any rider prepared to support the club were ably shepherded by Brett, easily transferring his ‘maitre de la peleton’ role to the customary route. In such fine weather the roads were busy but errant motorists were soon warned off by one of John’s verbal barrages and there were no accidents.
Graeme did not feel up to the day and sensibly decided not to keep the time-keepers waiting. The bunch finished pretty much together, despite enthusiastic efforts by our young blood, who should be reminded this is a team event. The nice gentlemen at Lydden await anyone with ideas above their present level. Finally Colin and I rolled in at 100 miles to cold tea from my thermos.
By popular agreement, Doug Bromham takes Man of the Match for time and distance, considering he was born the same year as Elvis. He is however not the oldest finisher, that honour goes to Abby, who measured against the lads with their dads, produces an age-spread of well over 65 years.
