newswheel :: May

Welcome back: another ‘old’ member has returned to ‘The Thanet’. Steve Huckstep, who was last a 1st claim member when he was a junior has rejoined as a veteran and has already made his mark in the evening TT’s. This can only be good for the club.

newswheel :: Birthday Rides

The provisional date for this years Birthday rides has now been changed to 26th August. We have yet to confirm this date with Sarre Mill. The reason for change is due to the fact that the prologue of this years Tour of Britain is starting at Crystal Palace on 9th September.

newswheel :: Road Racing

On Sunday 22nd April Doug Bromham, Mick Cooper, Bobbie Fairhall, Jenny & Terry Fearn, Pete Haswell, Andy McCall, Dave Mastin, Glenys & Graham O’Neill, Dave Saffery, Martin Tallontire, Paul Taylor and Brian Thomas carried out marshalling duties for the Kent Road Racing League event at Godmersham. One week later Graham O’Neill made his road racing debut in the LVRC races at Epsom but punctured (surprise, surprise) in the bunch when only 6 miles from the finish. At one stage he had managed to get away with another rider for around half a lap before being pulled back by the bunch.

newswheel :: Time Trialling

Fast times have been the order of the day in our evening 10s with practically all riders beating ‘evens’. The Q10/31 course record was broken by Paul Burrows on April 18th with a time of 20-59. Ten days later Paul, riding in the Kent Cycles event on the Q10/19 Tonbridge course, went close to a PB. Unfortunately the timekeeper was at the wrong place and so the course was short. (Before you ask NO it wasn’t Dave Saffery). In the evening points competition Peter Huckstep is leading with 28 points closely followed by Doug Bromham & Bobbie Fairhall both on 26.

newswheel :: Fourthcoming Events

Do you fancy a 400k, yes 4 hundred kilometres, ride? If you would like something a bit different try the Chiddingstone Causeway Kent National 400 Audax. Organised by the West Kent DA of the CTC the event starts at 1200 on Saturday 19th May. Entry fee is £8.50 and the event is based on a minimum speed of 15kph and a maximum of 30kph. This ride will involve some night riding. Further details from Dave Saffery.

newswheel :: Where am I hat

Those club members who have been members for a number of years will probably remember the “Where am I hat?”. This is a hat given each year at the annual dinner to the club member who has made the best effort at getting lost during the year. A particularly effective way of getting good points for this award is to lead a number of other members astray on a ride such as the KCA Reliability Trial. It is probably no surprise that Dave Saffery has been a regular winner. The current holder is Dave Mastin, who achieved this a couple years ago, and has not yet found a more suitable recipient.
