This was a story of mixed fortunes for club riders on a challenging day on the A20 Harrietsham to Charing course.

GS Invicta 25 - 13th June 2010 Q25/8

It was a typical summer's day on the Chilham course - nippy and a breeze that was difficult to work out where it was coming from.

The club had a couple of prizewinners with Simon Henderson fastest in the young vets category (Dave Wheeler was fastest in this group and overall, but the one prize per rider rule kicked in), and Andy Girling was fastest in the medium vets category.

On behalf of Claire may I thank you for your support for this new venture.

Shaftsbury MM 25 E2/25 and Dave Ashdown Memorial 10 mile TT Q10/22 Harietsham

Rick and Simon sorted out visas and prosthetic additional fingers and headed off for the E2/25. I'm leaving the story telling to Simon, since your sketch writer has run out of superlatives to describe the season the lad is having...

"Alas Perkins and Henderson...
...having travelled through several showers to Newmarket, we claimed our numbers and were sitting near the start in a warm dry car contemplating the ride ahead...
Perkins: “I’m up for it”
Henderson: "I’m not! 9°C it’s raining again and blowing a hooley"
Perkins: "We need to make our mind up by 15.40"
Henderson: "Uh" - disappears to discuss the course with the few riders that have just returned and comes back prepared for a training ride.
Perkins: "15.39 well I’m riding!"
Henderson: "I haven’t come all this way not to ride – let’s go for it!"

"In the event it was a tail wind with rain to the turn and a head wind back in the dry; the sun came out as I crossed the line..." (now why does that not surprise me? Ed.)

Results:
Rick Perkins: 1.00.17 18th overall
Simon Henderson 55.03 (PB), 2nd overall
Winner: Chris Rimes, Fenland Clarion, 55.00.

"So Rick – thanks for taking me and especially for the encouragment to actually ride; glad I didn’t sit it out with the other 55 DNS’s!"

"I was the only one there; other usual suspects saving themselves for the 25 tomorrow? I think not!

9°C so a bit nippy, but sunny and a slight breeze to battle on the way back compared to the outward leg."
