Inaugural MTB Ride - 15th November 2009

Peter Huckstep reports on the inaugural MTB Sunday ride which started from the bus shelter at St Nicholas...

Club leader Brett was waiting eagerly for his unsuspecting victims. 7 riders decided to take on the 20 mile mainly off road route. Last minute changes were necessary after heavy rain in the previous 24 hours. It was sunny when we set off, luckily it remained that way. We had waited till 9.15 for any late comers. Brett tried to enlist the road bike riders but none could be persuaded to join us.

Initially, it was a false sense of security. A firm track then along the seawall to Reculver. Up across The Downs, Herne Bay bound. Then we were warned of a slippery section through a wooded area. All went well until Brett, while crossing a wooden bridge “decked” it. He informed us we would not enjoy the ride unless we hit the floor at least once. Chris Bax obliged when we arrived at Herne woods, I think to make Brett feel better.

With leaves aplenty the woods were both taxing and challenging. Off road still towards Maypole and Brett had set us up with the steepest climb (well it felt like it) in East Kent. He threatened anyone who dismounted they would have to start the assent again. This proved too much for 'Angry John', who had been having difficulty getting his Wellingtons to fit the pedal straps. He said he would never go off road again.

Proceeding to the Roman Galley, Jill was next to muddy her lycra, trying to avoid a watery pot hole, in an orchard. Then parallel with the Thanet Way to Birchington. Brett had kept the best till last. A bridleway he said... I call it a ploughed field. John again protested, only to be told he and I "was a couple of tarts" as we were riding road tyres.

We parted at 12.20 on the nice tarmac roads of Birchington. Brett is offering to do the same next Sunday instead of waiting until the 3rd Sunday in December. Any offers??? Be warned he’s a sadist!
